NEW!! KittyKam Theme Song & FLash ------>
An abandoned Fireboat was  a hero during the rescue mission from 9/11.  Beautifully illustrated and imaginative true story by Maira Kalman.

1. Hank Aaron: Brave in Every Way by Peter Golenbock, ills by Paul Lee. Before blacks were allowed to play in the major leagues, Hank Aaron was determined that that was where he was going to play. When his success in the field triggered a deluge of hate mail, he refused to back down. This is the moving story of Hank Aaron's strength and perseverance--of how he became a great ballplayer and an inspiration to us all.
2. Hattie And The Fox  by Mem Fox; ills by Patricia Mullins  A hen warns her apathetic colleagues of a fox in the bushes.; Fox builds the suspense in this cumulative tale with precise pacing. Mullins uses tissue-paper collage to create an unusual effect, both fuzzy and comic.  According to Fox: "I regard Hattie as one of my classics. I love reading it aloud with lots of verve and noise in a sing song, very rhythmic, chanting style."  Read Mem Fox's Read-Aloud Ten Commandments here.
3. Yo! Yes? by Chris Raschka.  A Caldecott Honor Book in 1993 and named by School Library Journal as one of its 100 Books that Shaped the Century list.An effective, unusual 34-word story of the beginnings of a friendship, accompanied by wild and wonderful illustrations. Against pastel backgrounds, in vibrant, colorful images, an African-American boy and a white boy meet on the street. [Their] one- and two-word exchanges on each spread lead to a tentative offer of friendship, sealed as both boys jump high in the air and yell "Yow!"

5. Roller Coaster by Marla Frazee.  All sorts of people ride roller coasters, people over a certain height that is. Marla Frazee zooms in on one pony-tailed girl who has never experienced a roller coaster before, ever, in this start-to-finish ride. The anticipation builds much like it does in real-life: "S-l-o-w-l-y the train is pulled up the hill by a chain. Clickity, clackity. Clickity, clackity. Up. Up. Up. And then..."
6. Girl Wonder : A Baseball Story in Nine Innings by Deborah Hopkinson, ills by Terry Widener.  A fictional picture book based on the life of Alta Weiss, who at the age of 17 was the first female to pitch baseball for a semipro all-male team, the Vermilion Independents. Hopkinson does an outstanding job of highlighting the young woman's drive and ambition, not letting gender interfere with her goals. "Just sign me up, Coach.- And as sure as `Strike Out' is my middle name, I guarantee you'll sell lots of tickets. Folks are curious to see a girl play."
